Crime and
Punishment: An Analysis of the Human Soul
"Crime and Punishment", written by Fyodor Dostoevsky in 1866, is
one of the most influential novels in world literature. Through his
protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, the author explores philosophical, moral and
psychological issues that continue to resonate today.
The plot revolves around Raskolnikov, an impoverished student from St.
Petersburg who commits murder believing his act is justified. Raskolnikov
maintains a theory according to which there are "extraordinary"
people with the right to transgress moral laws in pursuit of a greater good.
However, after murdering an elderly moneylender, he faces an internal conflict
that consumes him.
